Successful trial of OTICON OPN

I made an appointment at RJ Donnan as I was interested in better quality hearing aids, after my assessment Rob recommended two different makes of hearing aids which he allowed me to trial at home for a week each time.
Rob is a pretty amazing guy, puts you at ease and listens to your needs ,at no point is there a hard sell, after trialling I decided on the Oticon aids , they are amazing to say life changing would be an understatement, I had previously worn NHS aids which gave me sound/noise no definition with the Oticon I can hear things I haven’t heard in a long time.
thanks to Rob And his team I am no longer in that unhappy place I can now enjoy my family and conversation which I missed so much, Rob’s attention to detail is second to none nothing is to much trouble , I would not hesitate in recommending RJ Donnan.

“Finding a hearing aid that can keep up with my active lifestyle has been life changing. I can rely on them in all environments be that in the gym, a wet day on the hills or at home with my young family. In my work life I am much happier and more confident that I can be involved in important conversations. They are robust and easy to maintain.
The absolute cherry on top is the ability to link my phone to the hearing aids so that I never miss a call or conversation, I can listen to music and adjust the settings via an app.

The advice, fitting and service that Rob and his team have provided has been fantastic, I would highly recommend anyone with hearing issues to get in touch. In the past I have felt limited by my hearing loss but now have a confidence in the technology that is enabling me to get in with life.”

UPDATE
“In addition to my previous comments I would say, the Apple Watch helps promote even more independence by being able to accept phone calls, access functions and listen to music without the need to have the phone right next to you.
In the gym, you can leave your phone in the locker and enjoy listening to music. When enjoying outdoor activities I can waterproof the phone in my bag and get stuck in, knowing I won’t miss calls and can access all the functions via the watch.

Very cool and discreet way of aiding me even more!”

Oticon Opn1 with remote control and TV streamer

I cannot recommend RJ Donnan Hearing Care enough. I needed new a new aid as my old one had finally given up the ghost, and even though I live several counties away and almost everything had to be done by email and post, the quality of service I’ve received has been absolutely the best ever.
This is a very professional company that really does understand clients needs. Rob listened to my requirements which are based on my hearing loss and previous experiences with various hearing aids and suppliers and came up with the goods. I was able to try several different aids at my own leisure, with no pressure, before settling on the new Oticon Opn1 with a remote control and TV streamer.
It’s not number 1 on Rob’s recommendations list for nothing. It has changed my life, nothing I’ve had before comes anywhere close to this aid. Conversation in all environments is now so much easier, listening to the TV either via the streamer or not is enjoyable again. My personal confidence is way above where it used to be, taking part in the world again is so much easier.

Phonak Audeo MINI III

I have purchased several hearing aids prior to seeing Rob at Cleckheaton.
Seven years ago I bought a pair of Phonaks from Rob at a much lower price than I spent on my previous hearing aids. Not only that, they are also much superior, giving better quality hearing, and I am getting excellent after care.
I have been seeing Rob quite regularly for minor adjustments and he has even adjusted my old pair (bought elsewhere) that are used for back- up.
I am pleased to support Rob by awarding him full marks for the excellent business he runs and the personal touch he provides in such a friendly manner.

Excellent service….nothing was too much trouble for Rob……couldn’t have been more helpful. Have been to other Hearing Centres in the past and I can say by experience that Rob is the best one I have encountered for service and listening to my needs. There was no hard sell and would definitely recommend.

Nuala’s review of the Oticon Opn working with the iPhone and iWatch

5 out of 5 stars
5/5

nuala2I have bought Apple products for a number of years and I’m always keen to keep updated on the most up to date technology and accessibility features. Recently, I was lucky enough to get an Apple iWatch so decided to write a review on how accessible it is for people who are deaf/have hearing loss to use the iWatch. Here are my 5 most important functions of the iWatch.

Firstly, the most important function for me has been using the vibrating alarm. I have had a few scares recently where I haven’t been waking up to my usual iPhone alarm and nearly missing work! I really like the vibrating function on the wrist. It’s strong enough to wake me up in the mornings, and also plays a ping noise alongside the vibrations. Using an “under the pillow” vibrating alarm is old technology if you’re wondering why I’ve chosen to use this as my alarm now. Also if you sleep alongside someone, it wakes them up too as the vibrations are vigorous and shake the whole bed. Let’s just be honest, who wants to be woken up that way?

Secondly, the ability to stream music from the iWatch to my Oticon Opn1 hearing aid is fantastic. I am able to choose my playlist from my Apple music account through the watch, and it connects via Bluetooth straight into my ear. No one else is able to hear the music other than me which is useful when I’m in the gym, as I can leave my phone in my bag so not to distract me.

Thirdly, I have downloaded the Oticon app and currently use the programme function on the iWatch. This has been particularly useful when I have been learning something unfamiliar, and need to write notes as well as trying to listen to what is being said. I have been able to change the volume up/down, and use the mic function to stream sound into my ear. The majority of my time using the mic function has been in meetings, (when I want an extra ‘boost’ from the leaders voice), I can concentrate less on lip-reading and become more involved in discussions.

Forth, the notification options. I enjoy having the option to choose which notifications come through a vibration from my iPhone to the iWatch. I currently have calendar notifications set up. This has been useful to remind me of my ENT and Audiology appointments, and what time I need to leave to travel to them. I also use the text notifications through the watch. The option to reply using voice-to-text has saved me time when my phone has been elsewhere! It recognises exactly what I want to say each time and I haven’t had any problems with incorrect wording or grammar so far. Another app I have been using frequently is the exercise/health app already incorporated on it. I was able to set a daily target for movement, exercise and standing. The iWatch vibrates on my wrist to remind me to improve my stats if I haven’t moved for a while, or if I’m not on track to meet my target. This has provided me with mental encouragement, especially as the majority of my day to day job is sat down at an office desk.

Fifth and final, the telephone function. The iWatch allows you to make a list of your ‘favourite’ contacts from your phonebook, which you can then touch their contact number/picture from a list, and the call will stream through the iWatch to my Oticon Opn1 hearing aid. Again when you receive any calls, these come through the vibration feature which has been useful as I don’t miss important calls, and I can dismiss any calls I think may be unwanted by pressing the dismiss icon on the watch. The ability to stream the phone calls straight to my Oticon Opn1 has meant I am able to hear the conversation more clearly, as there is no background noise to distract the conversation. This has really boosted my confidence, and I now use the telephone frequently.

The actual name for the vibration feature on the iWatch is “taptic engine” if anyone was wondering 🙂

‘Apple’ ‘iPhone’ and ‘iWatch’ are Trademarks of Apple.

Lucy’s confidence boost

lucyBeing ‘deaf’ has always been a part of my life whether it sometimes be big or small, depending how I felt that day. but I can honestly say thanks to my new hearing aids fitted by Rob in February 2016 I now only see it as a positive.

I have never really been given an explanation to my hearing loss but it’s always been there and at about 7 years old I got my first set of hearing aids through the NHS. They were huge! Like big brown boxes on the back of my ears and moulds that made my ears stick out like Dumbo’s. The novelty quickly wore off and before long I hated them, they officially made me ‘the deaf girl’ at school. My teachers were always very mindful and respectful, the students, not so much. After a few years I tried to embrace the situation, there was no hiding them so why not go bold or go home. The NHS trying to be ‘hip and down with the kids’ offered me the chance to get new hearing aids, obviously with advanced technology but the main selling point was the bright colours and glitter. I went with bright green at first then purple. WhIlst the moulds were glittery and even had a dolphin cartoons on.

Then my teenage years hit. That was it, I was too old to be the girl with hearing aids any longer. Almost over night I stopped wearing them. At first I’d take them out on my way to school, hide them in my bag and put them back in when I got home. I started dropping hints to my family that I no longer needed them, it was a miracle I was cured! Of course not true, I just hated the way they seemed to define me, they effected my self confidence so much that I’d rather struggle. At the time I had no idea how much I’d be missing.

I then went the next 5 ish years with no hearing aids, granted my lip reading got rather good, I had no concept of how much I was missing, the little things especially. For a long time I had convinced myself I didn’t really need them ‘I was coping just fine.’ In reality I frustrated everyone with my constant ‘eh? What? Pardon?.’ I’d need the TV blasting or even with subtitles, I’d jump so easily as couldn’t pick up my surroundings, I couldn’t locate voices and sounds to save my life. The list goes on.

Some thing suddenly clicked at 21, I knew I was kidding myself I needed hearing aids. And having had a free trial from Rob at 18 I knew they were fantastic, I just had to bite the bullet. Rob and his team provided me with a unique, personal and highly professional service. I now love surprising people with my secret, hidden hearing aids. I feel so much more confident socialising, especially in large groups. Where I’d once ask someone to repeat themselves a few times, still not hear, so just smile and nod. I feel included and involved in all aspects, I can laugh along because I actually got to hear the joke before it was no longer funny. When Rob first fitted me with my hearing aids, I walked to my car and for the first time heard it unlock. I didn’t even know cars did that! Just the start of a long list of little things I didn’t know I was missing. Along with the com pilot gadget I am now even the envy of my friends and colleagues. I can listen to music and answer calls through the best headphones on the market.

In short; Thanks to Rob and my new babies, My confidence has grown, my frustration gone and being ‘deaf’ in no way shape or form defines me.
